Each year, the Florida International University Alumni Association honors distinguished alumni and a faculty member at the annual Torch Awards Gala. The Torch Award honors the memory of Senator Ernest R. Graham, the forward thinking champion who helped to create the University. Recipients of the award are recognized for the positive impact on their profession, the community and the university.
The recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Awards are selected by the Colleges and Schools and the Charles E. Perry Young Alumni Visionary Award, Community Leadership Award and the Outstanding Faculty Member Award are selected by the Torch Awards Committee of the FIUAA. The committee is composed of alumni representatives who represent past Torch Award recipients and the FIUAA Board of Directors.
President Modesto A. Maidique and Jose Perez de Corcho, president of the FIU Alumni Association, will honor the 2008 recipients at the 8th Annual Torch Awards Gala. The gala dinner will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2009, with cocktail reception commencing at 6:30pm and dinner and ceremony at 7:30pm at the Graham Center Ballroom at the University Park Campus of Florida International University.
The gala not only honors the outstanding recipients but also serves as a fundraiser for student scholarships.
