My time as a student at FIU was filled with numerous memorable experiences. Some of my favorite times include cheering on FIU in the Graham Center Pit or spending a late Thursday night hanging out at what was then Gracie’s Grill. Although I look fondly back at those memories, I hold most dear the people that were a big part of them. Recently, I learned that our beloved Ruth Hamilton will be retiring after 35 years of service. As I recalled my countless interactions with her as a student leader, I started thinking about all the positive testimonials that many of our fellow Panthers shared about Ruth’s energy, mentorship and assistance.
As the Executive Director of the Graham Center, Ruth created a vibrant, energetic atmosphere where we could all be true college students at a growing FIU. From our first day on campus at orientation to the hours studying in GC on the path to graduation, I can confidently say that Ruth was invested in seeing FIU students succeed! She was an integral part of our journey to becoming the people we are today! On Friday, May 9, 2014, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00p.m., our FIU community will gather in the GC Ballrooms to extend “A Million Thanks” for Ruth’s committed service to our FIU. Please join me in celebrating Ruth’s retirement. Let’s gather to honor her service and mentorship that she provided to so many of us.
I would also like to invite you to make a gift to a new initiative that Ruth is starting for the benefit of current and future Panthers, the Ruth Hamilton Make a Difference Fund. Ruth is particularly committed to facilitating better networking opportunities because she believes in the power of the Panther Network and our ability to be advocates for each other. This fund seeks to develop internship and mentorship partnerships between FIU Alumni in various fields and current FIU students. We hope that we can count on you to join us in sending Ruth off and making a commitment to the Ruth Hamilton Make a Difference Fund.
I look forward to seeing you all on May 9!
Sincerely yours,
Frank J. Pena ’99
