The FIUinDC Alumni Chapter hosted a spring reception honoring Katherine Vargas, a DC resident and recipient of the Torch 2014 Charles E. Perry Young Alumni Visionary Award during the 2014. As Director of Hispanic Media for the White House, Vargas acts as spokesperson for Hispanics across the country, voicing concerns for laws and policies. Vargas reports directly to President Obama, briefing him on current events in the Hispanic demographic. During the event, a multitude of Panthers from the DC area mingled with the guest of honor and enjoyed light hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. An International Relations graduate of FIU, Vargas ended the night by speaking on behalf of FIU and how the institution gave her the education and tools to strive for greatness and reach her full potential.
