We are disappointed that the Miami Herald has decided not to cover our football home opener, although we have credentialed members of the Herald staff. We did not issue a media credential to the Herald’s beat reporter because of concerns we have brought up to the reporter and editors about his antagonistic interactions with our student athletes, coaches and staff. He is not banned from FIU or FIU Stadium. He just does not have additional access beyond that of the public.
We welcome media coverage of our athletics program that is conducted in a professional manner and is respectful of the student athletes and institution.
We honor and respect the principles of freedom of the press, transparency and professionalism. Through our School of Journalism and Mass Communication, we prepare students to shed light on the most important issues we face in the world.
Like FIU, The Miami Herald is an anchor institution that plays an important role in our community. We appreciate the hard work of its reporters. We are proud of our many alumni who work for the Herald or who have worked for the newspaper and been on its Pulitzer Prize-winning news teams.
We will be meeting with the Herald’s leadership soon, and we hope to reach a resolution and continue a positive working relationship.
