Alumna donates scholarship for First Generation Student

MarciaAlumna Marcia del Rey ’05, a graduate of the College of Law’s inaugural class, has recently committed to funding a $25,000 scholarship in support of the Marcia del Rey ’05 First Generation Scholarship. The gift is aimed to support a student who is the first in their family to attend professional school. The scholarship, when matched by the College of Law’s First Generation Scholarship program, will equal a near-full scholarship.

The first alumna to support a full scholarship to a College of Law student, Marcia del Rey ’05, established the Law Offices of Marcia del Rey, P.A. and has focused her career on Family Law. A single mother committed to education and the community, her motivation in establishing the scholarship is to help students who have overcome adversity, have excelled academically, and have demonstrated financial need.

“This scholarship represents an opportunity to support students, give back to FIU Law, and fulfill a promise to pay it forward,” noted del Rey. “I am so proud to be part of the FIU Law family, and have known since day one that the College of Law would always strive for excellence.”

“The commitment of our alumni to the College of Law is amazing, and the donation of this scholarship by Marcia is a testament to our community” noted Dean R. Alexander Acosta. “They give back in time, talent and treasure and we are proud of their continued individual and collective successes. We could not be more grateful for their support.”

The FIU College of Law First Generation Scholarship program, established in 2012, has raised or awarded over $400,000 in scholarships. These scholarships have been funded by international and local law firms, long-time FIU Law supporters, faculty, and now alumni.  To learn more about FIU Law Scholarships click here.
