The program offers participants hands-on leadership, research and professional development experience in both Miami and Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The inaugural group\u00a0includes both undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines who will collaborate to amplify FIU\u2019s national strengths and answer the challenges of our time. They will connect with thought leaders in Miami and the nation\u2019s capital to springboard FIU\u2019s successes further into the national conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cFIU has provided me countless opportunities for service-learning experiences, such as \u00a0Alternative Breaks and Peace Corps Prep,\u201d said Victoria Mendez, Capital Leader and sophomore at FIU majoring in international relations. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to apply the attributes I have gained to the Capital Leadership Experience and help pave the way for my fellow Panthers to become the changemakers of tomorrow in Washington D.C.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The experience grants students the opportunity to hone in on areas of interest while positioning them for full-time internships and career opportunities in Washington, D.C. through\u00a0networking\u00a0events, alumni mentorship and career development activities. The students will also be able to showcase their talents through\u00a0briefings with high-profile leaders and online spotlights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On March 18, President Mark B. Rosenberg hosted an inaugural reception for Capital Leaders at the Frost Art Museum. The event was sponsored by the Office of Engagement. The Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs Founding Dean John F. Stack and State Department Diplomat in Residence Catherine Rodriguez were among guests who met\u00a0with the group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Meet the spring\/summer 2016 Capital Leaders:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive aligncenter size-full wp-image-10423\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/shahed.jpg\" alt=\"shahed\" width=\"103\" height=\"101\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Shahed Altammar<\/b> is a doctoral candidate in\u00a0international and public affairs at FIU. Growing up in the Middle East, she experienced the need to raise social awareness, and co-founded a non-profit organization that focuses on training young and mid-career professionals in all aspects of life\u2014from education to employment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive aligncenter size-full wp-image-10422\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/victoria.jpg\" alt=\"victoria\" width=\"103\" height=\"102\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Victoria\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mendez<\/b> is a sophomore in international relations at the Steven J. She aspires to work for the United Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive aligncenter size-full wp-image-10420\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Christian.jpg\" alt=\"Christian\" width=\"103\" height=\"102\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Christian Ilarraza-Colon<\/b> is a junior studying international relations in the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs. Having studied abroad in Turkey, he\u00a0aims to change Americans\u2019\u00a0perception of countries in the Middle East\u00a0and\u00a0help to influence cyber security policies for foreign diplomats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive aligncenter size-full wp-image-10419\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Joanne.jpg\" alt=\"Joanne\" width=\"103\" height=\"102\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Joanne Ling<\/b> is a freshman majoring in public administration with a focus on Asian language and culture. She is a member of the FIU Model United Nations team. Her interests include advocacy for\u00a0disenfranchised groups, LGBT rights and public health concerns in the United States and abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive aligncenter size-full wp-image-10418\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Galina.jpg\" alt=\"Galina\" width=\"103\" height=\"102\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Galina Abdelaziz<\/b> is a sophomore studying international relations. She aims to use the knowledge from\u00a0her studies to create documentaries and short films on\u00a0the plight of the voiceless to spur\u00a0change. Abdelaziz is a nationally-ranked videographer and a delegate of FIU\u2019s Model United Nations\u00a0team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive aligncenter size-full wp-image-10417\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Jonathan.jpg\" alt=\"Jonathan\" width=\"102\" height=\"102\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Jonathan Mahadeo\u00a0<\/b>is a published\u00a0graduate student with FIU\u2019s STEM Transformation Institute. His\u00a0research focuses on uncovering students\u2019 computing identity via nationally representative surveys to examine the effect on students\u2019 STEM career choices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive aligncenter size-full wp-image-10416\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Michelle.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle\" width=\"103\" height=\"101\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Michelle Rodriguez<\/b> is a junior studying psychology with an interest in international relations and public policy. She is a member of the FIU Model United Nations team.
