From firsthand accounts of inspiring stories to conversations about cutting edge research and finding solutions to global problems, TEDxFIU speakers show the world what it means to be <em>Worlds Ahead<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>With a new year underway and the fifth annual TEDxFIU event around the corner, the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tedxfiu.com\/apply\" target=\"_blank\">TEDxFIU 2016 speaker applications<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are now open. A new, separate application for those who wish\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fiupub.wufoo.com\/forms\/be-a-tedxfiu-performer-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">to perform at TEDxFIU 2016 is also available<\/a><\/strong>. The application deadline is May 13.<\/p>\n<p>You can submit applications for both being a speaker or a performer, but if selected you will most likely only be selected for one, unless the performance is relevant to the speech.<\/p>\n<h2>TEDxFIU from the stage<\/h2>\n<p>TEDxFIU audience members often say they leave their seats in awe and admiration after hearing the talks. But TEDxFIU speakers also leave the event with a lot more than a check mark on their bucket lists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole process of being a speaker was amazing,\u201d <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.fiu.edu\/2015\/11\/2015-tedxfiu-speakers-exemplify-perseverance\/\" target=\"_blank\">TEDxFIU 2015<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Speaker and Autism Philanthropist Patricia Kayser says. \u201cWorking with Char [Charlene Eberly, TEDxFIU speech coach] . . . was life changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last November on the TEDxFIU stage, Kayser\u00a0shared how she became a musician to connect with her brother, who was diagnosed on the autism spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>Kayser says her TEDxFIU experience motivates her to keep using her voice to shed light on autism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve literally been in thousands of talks, but a talk like this is different,\u201d TEDxFIU 2015 Speaker Todd Crowl, director of FIU\u2019s Southeast Environmental Research Center and co-founder of FIU\u2019s Sea Level Solutions Center says. \u201cHere you start talking, and they tell you \u2018no, no, no, you\u2019re doing it wrong.\u2019 The people really know what they\u2019re doing and they put so much effort into this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re ready to embrace the challenge, celebrate TEDxFIU\u2019s fifth anniversary and become a speaker, apply on the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tedxfiu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">TEDxFIU site<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To prepare, check out\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/go.fiu.edu\/tedxfiu2015\" target=\"_blank\">last year\u2019s talks<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Questions and concerns can be sent to Sharonda Glover at <a href=\"mailto:sglover@fiu.edu\">sglover@fiu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guest Author: Gisela Valencia &#8217;15<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For four years, TEDxFIU has captivated the FIU community.
