Without training, graduates are left ill-equipped to provide proper care for these unique and often misunderstood individuals with<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aaidd.org\/intellectual-disability\/definition\/faqs-on-intellectual-disability\"> intellectual and developmental disabilities<\/a> (IDD)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Enter <strong>Karlyn Emile, DHSc, MPH, CHES \u201905, \u201911<\/strong>, one FIU alumna creating a world of change right here in South Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never dreamed that this line of work would become my passion, but I thank God that it did. I could not have chosen a better group of individuals to serve,\u201d Karlyn says.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/specialolympicsflorida.org\/\"><strong>Director of Special Olympics Healthy Community<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>South Florida<\/strong><\/a>, Karlyn is committed to providing education and care for the vulnerable, underserved IDD population. \u201cIndividuals with IDD receive disproportionately lower standards of care,\u201d she says, \u201cThey require an individualized approach to healthcare that focuses on the most prevalent health issues that they face.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11324\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11324\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive wp-image-11324\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/12552511_564984073666481_7711534603204259924_n.jpg\" alt=\"12552511_564984073666481_7711534603204259924_n\" width=\"660\" height=\"439\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Karlyn and Healthy Community interns from FIU<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her warmth, love and compassion have continued to inspire \u2013 over 70 FIU students have interned with her at Healthy Community, a practicum affiliated site! Many of her interns write follow-up guest posts on <a href=\"https:\/\/karlynemile.wordpress.com\/\">Karlyn\u2019s blog<\/a>, discussing how rewarding and life-changing their experiences have been.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond providing invaluable internship opportunities, Karlyn also visits during Panther Alumni Week, serves on the host committee for The Path Awards and, together with Healthy Community, Karlyn has hosted the Spring into Wellness Health Fair at FIU.<\/p>\n<p>Karlyn discovered her passion for health education and teaching during her time at FIU\u2019s Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work. Observing her female instructors, especially those with a similar ethnic background, became a major source of inspiration for Karlyn. \u201cSome of my professors even took it upon themselves to take me under their wings and mentor me,\u201d Karlyn says, \u201cTheir influence was a great confidence booster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive alignleft wp-image-11326\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/CgNBbDPWsAEdKbL.jpg\" alt=\"CgNBbDPWsAEdKbL\" width=\"350\" height=\"467\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For Karlyn, the highlight of her experience as an FIU student was an independent study internship with Dr. Pilar Martin. During this time, Karlyn made some incredible strides, including seven medical trips around Haiti establishing temporary clinics and providing primary care and health education. While there, she also conducted research and community health assessments.<\/p>\n<p>These Panthers travel in a pack: Karlyn\u2019s sister, Marie Aime \u201999; two brothers-in-law Esaie Aime, DPT \u201901 and Ansler Titus \u201902; and her niece, Alisha Cox \u201815 join Karlyn as FIU alumni. Additionally,\u00a0two more of Karlyn&#8217;s family members are current\u00a0FIU students!\u00a0As an undergraduate, Karlyn received the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fiualumni.com\/student-programs\/student-scholarships\/\">FIU Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship<\/a><\/strong>, which she says helped to &#8220;offset tuition and other college related expenses, such as books and transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panther Pride runs deep in Karlyn\u2019s family. \u201cSharing my alma mater with my family certainly brings us closer. We often debate over whom is a bigger Panther fan and most of us proudly display the FIU license plate on our cars,\u201d says Karlyn. \u201cAll of us have been able to accomplish our career goals because of the valuable education that was gained right here at home, at FIU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I spent many years on the FIU grounds,&#8221; Karlyn says, &#8220;I did a lot of soul searching and found that I wanted to do great things in my community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, Karlyn.
