Like her mother before her, Cisely Scott made education her career. Initially,\u00a0she followed in her mother\u2019s footsteps, working as a Miami-Dade County Public Schools teacher. Then she became an assistant principal. On Thursday, she made her mother proud.<\/p>\n

School district\u00a0leaders named Scott the Assistant Principal of the Year. This marks the fourth consecutive year an FIU alumnus has won\u00a0this award.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard my name it was just surreal,\u201d\u00a0said Scott, who earned a bachelor\u2019s in elementary education in 2000. \u201cI was overcome with\u00a0joy, there was just\u00a0this energy\u00a0from a whole room of people\u00a0being excited for you that just overtakes you. I felt humbled. I felt proud. I was excited.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Scott, a good day at work means motivating all 420 students at Miami\u2019s Lenora B. Smith Elementary to succeed. Scott and her teachers celebrate students with perfect attendance and they plan math and science nights where students learn while having a good time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re having fun competing in different mathematical contests, I was competing with children in the fraction competition,\u201d she said. \u201cThey build airplanes and see who can go the farthest. They\u2019ve even learned to make ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nScott also ensures teachers are motivated. She has built tight bonds with her teachers, knowing when to reassure them and when to push them to accomplish tougher goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey know we\u2019re setting the bar high and I want to inspire them to move a little higher,\u201d Scott said. \u201cWe\u2019re producing leaders and we\u2019re building the bench as we go along.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
