{"id":15865,"date":"2020-05-05T19:07:30","date_gmt":"2020-05-05T19:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fiualumni.com\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/?p=15865"},"modified":"2020-07-24T19:10:34","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T19:10:34","slug":"alumnus-helps-companies-navigate-the-new-world-of-remote-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fiualumni.com\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/index.php\/2020\/05\/05\/alumnus-helps-companies-navigate-the-new-world-of-remote-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumnus helps companies navigate the new world of remote work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u2013By Jordan Cross-Ogiste for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.fiu.edu\/2020\/global-learning-alumni-help-companies-navigate-the-new-world-of-remote-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FIU News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ilan Timerman &#8217;19 has never been one to sit back at any organization of which he has been a part.<\/p>\n<p>During his time at FIU\u2014before he graduated with a bachelor&#8217;s in sustainability and the environment\u2014Timerman was campus director for Hult Prize; a staff member at\u00a0StartUP FIU; secretary of transportation and safety in student government; a member of the\u00a0Global Civic Engagement Advisory Board under the Center for Leadership and Service; an\u00a0Honors College student; and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goglobal.fiu.edu\/medallion\/\">Global Learning Medallion (GLM)<\/a>\u00a0recipient.<\/p>\n<p>Now he serves as a product specialist at Qualtrics in Utah, helping clients navigate the world of remote work during the coronavirus pandemic. He credits many of the skills that help him to excel at his job to his experiences as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goglobal.fiu.edu\/\">global learning<\/a>\u00a0student.<\/p>\n<p>In his position, Timerman supports Qualtrics users\u2014who range\u00a0from students trying to use the software for class assignments at a university to large-scale corporations\u2014find the best way to\u00a0gather and understand insights from their customers and employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQualtrics allows companies to understand human emotions, beliefs, sentiments and values,&#8221; Timerman says. &#8220;Our platform enables them to close some of the world\u2019s biggest &#8216;experience gaps&#8217; that exist within small teams and even global organizations by helping companies identify\u00a0the gap between what a customer expects and what they\u2019re actually receiving. My core job is assisting clients with implementing<br \/>\nand using the platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Timerman spoke to\u00a0<i>FIU News<\/i>\u00a0about how his time at the university has benefited him.<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>How has your job changed since the work-from-home order due to the coronavirus?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new part of my job is supporting clients who are using one of the new solutions Qualtrics\u00a0released early on in our work-from-home phase. Shortly after we all moved to remote work,\u00a0Qualtrics released solutions to enable our customers to help their employees during remote\u00a0work, such as understanding what their employees need in order to feel supported and\u00a0productive.<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>How has being a Global Learning student aided you in your professional life?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Global Learning has opened my eyes to understand that not everything has a model and helped\u00a0me to empathize better. Before being involved with Global Learning, I didn\u2019t think the same way that I do now. My\u00a0interdisciplinary knowledge has grown, and I empathize better with coworkers. I think that same\u00a0empathy also helps me to better support clients, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>How do you plan to apply your global learning education moving forward?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m interested in getting involved with creating experiences for employee engagement and internal experiences within the company. Specifically using that skill of empathy that I developed through Global Learning to understand how to create great experiences for incoming employees and being able to identify gaps for others.<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>What would you say to students considering the Global Learning Medallion program?\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Definitely do it. It\u2019s completely worth it to get so many different perspectives from so many different people. Also, being able to acquire the tools of being able to empathize better with others, identify gaps and see things from a different perspective is going to help you in the future, as it did with me.<\/p>\n<p>Even getting into different interdisciplinary events and\u00a0networking with so many inspiring people\u00a0&#8211; it\u2019s completely worth it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>The Global Learning Medallion is an interactive, participatory program consisting of an extensive series of courses and activities designed to enhance your global awareness, global perspective, and attitude of global engagement.
