Rosenberg and advocates presented the university\u2019s\u00a0priorities to Congress and celebrated 50\u00a0years of federal partnerships this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><strong>President Rosenberg meets with Florida delegation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/B_Rl41fWsAAXCAd-300x400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive alignleft wp-image-6471 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/B_Rl41fWsAAXCAd-300x400-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"President Rosenberg and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">Graduate Medical Education (GME)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This past Tuesday, March 3,\u00a0President Mark B. Rosenberg traveled to Capitol Hill\u00a0to present FIU\u2019s\u00a0federal priorities to the\u00a0Florida delegation. In more than\u00a0eight meetings, including with both Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio,\u00a0Rosenberg and Vice President of Governmental Relations Michelle Palacio updated\u00a0the delegation on the impact of federal\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #c5960c;\" href=\"http:\/\/government.fiu.edu\/federal\/financial-aid\/index.html\">financial aid<\/a>\u00a0and detailed some of the university\u2019s\u00a0key priorities, which include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #444444;\">\n<li>Graduate Medical Education (GME)<\/li>\n<li>Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) University Transportation Center (UTC)<\/li>\n<li>Environmental Resilience + Sea Level Solutions<\/li>\n<li>STEM Education Research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">For more information on all of our federal priorities, visit the\u00a0Federal Priorities\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #c5960c;\" href=\"http:\/\/government.fiu.edu\/_assets\/docs\/2015%20FEDERAL%20PRIORITIES.pdf\">document page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">Front and center is\u00a0the\u00a0need to increase the maximum Pell grant award and also a return of the second Pell that was available to FIU\u00a0students prior to 2011. Currently, nearly 20,000 FIU students are on Pell grants and 50\u00a0percent of those are at the level of greatest need. When the second Pell award was eliminated in 2011, FIU students lost more than\u00a0$10 million in federal aid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FIU at 50:\u00a0Federal partnerships celebrated \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The meetings were followed by a reception overlooking the national mall with\u00a0key Congressional\u00a0champions, administration alumni\u00a0and national\u00a0partners.\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #c5960c;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/fiudc\/sets\/72157651174645912\/\">Together they celebrated FIU\u2019s 50 years of impact<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">President Rosenberg gave a few remarks thanking FIU\u2019s federal partners and emphasizing the progress the university has made since its founding\u00a050 years ago. Attending that evening were Senator Marco Rubio and Congressman Carlos Curbelo \u2013 both of which spoke of their pride for what FIU has become in such short time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive alignleft wp-image-6473 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fiualumni-eastus.azurewebsites.net\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/B_MjJatW0AEQmwZ-400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"President Mark B. Rosenberg meets with Congresswoman Federica Wilson in the capitol.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>\u201cI am honored by the opportunity to serve my community in Congress and look forward to working with FIU, its alumni and advocates to advance its priorities in Washington. It gives me\u00a0great pride to represent 43,000 Panthers who live in Florida\u2019s 26th Congressional District,\u201d said Curbelo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">Representing the administration were key alumni and friends\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0State Department, Departments of State,\u00a0Housing and Urban Development,\u00a0Commerce, NOAA, U.S. Coast Guard and many Hill offices. The event had an added air of electricity on the heels of the\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #c5960c;\" href=\"http:\/\/news.fiu.edu\/2015\/03\/the-president-of-the-united-states-at-fiu\/85561\">historic visit by President Obama to Modesto A. Maidique Campus\u00a0last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><strong>Advocacy teams engage visiting Washington Center students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">The FIU in D.C. team, FIU Office of Engagement and the FIU Student Government Association were invited to present to Mexican students working in The Washington Center for the spring term. The presentation centered on\u00a0what makes advocacy successful and best practices for community engagement. The FIU representatives were Nicole Kaufman, interim vice president for Engagement; Carlos Becerra, director of Federal Relations; Alexis Calatayud, SGA president; and Pamela Pamel\u00e1, Federal Relations intern.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hispanic leadership celebration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>FIU in D.C., Panthers\u00a0in town from Miami, and FIU alumni residing in the area attended The Cuban-American National Council (CNC) leadership celebration at the Library of Congress this past Monday, March 2.
