Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Miami, she earned a degree in <a href=\"http:\/\/news.fiu.edu\/2015\/03\/alumna-is-disneys-first-latina-princess\/%20http:\/\/pir.fiu.edu\">international relations<\/a> in 2008 and then moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting.<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old actress started her career in 2007 starring in a number of short films. She even made a contribution to the <em>Sh*t Girls Say <\/em>viral phenomenon in 2012 with <em>Sh*t Miami Girls Say\u2026and guys. <\/em>Since then, Carrero has gone on to become a household name as a series regular in the ABC Family sitcom <a href=\"http:\/\/abcfamily.go.com\/shows\/young-and-hungry\"><em>Young and Hungry<\/em><\/a>. She\u2019s made guest appearances on shows like <em>The Mentalist<\/em>, <em>Hannah Montana<\/em> and <em>Lincoln Heights<\/em>. Her new role on Disney isn\u2019t her first experience in voice acting. Carrero played Sophia in the 2009 animated film <em>Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Carrero\u2019s character Princess Elena will make her debut on a special episode of the Disney preschool hit <a href=\"http:\/\/disneyjunior.com\/sofia-the-first\"><em>Sofia the First<\/em><\/a>. The princess will then star in a spinoff series <em>Elena of Avalor<\/em> on Disney Junior.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement issued by Disney, \u201cPrincess Elena\u2019s journey began long ago when her parents and kingdom were taken from her by the evil sorceress, Shuriki.
