{"id":8196,"date":"2015-09-01T11:54:21","date_gmt":"2015-09-01T11:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fiualumni.com\/?p=8196"},"modified":"2018-05-09T12:55:59","modified_gmt":"2018-05-09T12:55:59","slug":"class-gifts-a-new-way-of-giving-for-business-alumni","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fiualumni.com\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/index.php\/2015\/09\/01\/class-gifts-a-new-way-of-giving-for-business-alumni\/","title":{"rendered":"Class Gifts a New Way of Giving for Business Alumni"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At FIU\u2019s 2015 commencement ceremonies, for the first time, many College of Business students are wearing a special cord or stole with their graduation gown to show their support of a new way of giving back: the class gift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year marks the 50th anniversary of the university and the College of Business has initiated an effort for each class to make a gift,\u201d said Danielle van der Eijk, chair of the newly formed Business Student Philanthropy Council. \u201cBusiness students have stepped up, becoming part of a culture of giving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Van der Eijk, inaugural members of the Council were Carolina Galiano, Gedma Estrada and Litong Chen, all members of the Class of 2015, and Kevin Carballe, now a senior.<\/p>\n<p>For a tax-deductible contribution of $20.15, members of the Class of 2015 receive a blue and gold cord to show their participation, while Panthers who donate $40.00 receive an FIU Business stole.<\/p>\n<p>The Class of 2015\u2019s gift will go to the FIU Student Enhancement Fund, which helps pay for out-of-the-classroom experiences such as case competitions and professional development opportunities, scholarships and mentoring programs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"iframe-embed\" align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vFMUnOUnDu8?feature=oembed&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-aspectratio=\"0.562962962962963\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Panthers have responded to this idea in an impressive way, reported Yanyn San Luis \u201910, assistant director of Alumni Relations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Business Student Philanthropy Council was organized in the fall semester of 2014, and the class gift opportunity was offered to members of the Class of 2015,\u201d said San Luis. \u201cOver 100 graduates at the spring commencement participated, raising $2,367 \u2013 very impressive for a new idea. It\u2019s amazing how individual gifts add up quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Luis said three of the founding members of the council have graduated and new members have joined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to have established a structure of giving,\u201d said van der Eijk. \u201cSeniors are telling us how they\u2019ve benefited from the Student Enhancement Fund and are happy to participate.
