{"id":8413,"date":"2015-09-21T10:57:48","date_gmt":"2015-09-21T10:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fiualumni.com\/?p=8413"},"modified":"2018-05-09T13:37:55","modified_gmt":"2018-05-09T13:37:55","slug":"soledad-obrien-selects-fiu-to-kick-off-latino-in-america-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fiualumni.com\/stay-connected\/alumni-news\/newsroom\/index.php\/2015\/09\/21\/soledad-obrien-selects-fiu-to-kick-off-latino-in-america-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Soledad O\u2019Brien selects FIU to kick off Latino in America tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the No. 1\u00a0university in the nation for awarding bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees to Hispanic students, it\u2019s\u00a0fitting that award-winning journalist Soledad O\u2019Brien will kick off her national tour, I Am Latino in America<strong>, <\/strong>at FIU\u2019s\u00a0Graham Center ballrooms Monday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am pleased to kick off our tour at FIU with a diverse and energized student body whose aim I share to empower Latino voters in this critical swing state,\u201d O\u2019Brien said.<\/p>\n<p>The timely conversation of the growing Latino influence on the U.S. economy, education, jobs, health care, media and its impact on the 2016 election will also include a panel discussion with\u00a0Dr. Pedro \u201cJoe\u201d Greer, associate dean for community engagement and professor and chair of FIU Department of Medicine, Family Medicine and Community Health; Jorge Plasencia, former chairman of the National Council of La Raza; and Maria Gabriela (\u201cGaby\u201d) Pacheco, immigrant rights leader and DREAMer.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, O\u2019Brien will be accompanied by influencers, celebrities, national and local advocates, business leaders, students and academics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to welcome Soledad O\u2019Brien back to campus,\u201d said Jose Toscano, director of <a href=\"http:\/\/campuslife.fiu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Campus Life<\/a>. \u201cThe Latino in America tour covers so many topics and issues that affect our students, faculty and staff first-hand.
