A \u00a0School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) graduate student was\u00a0one of only\u00a0193 young\u00a0leaders around the world chosen to represent member states at the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Summit in\u00a0New York late September.<\/p>\n

\"Rafikova\"Alina Rafikova<\/a> \u2013 a Fulbright scholar pursuing a master\u2019s degree in mass communication\u00a0with a specialization in global strategic communications \u2013\u00a0represented Russia, where she\u00a0lived since she was 12 years old after moving from Uzbekistan with her family.<\/p>\n

Rafikova participated in\u00a0the negotiation process of the UN\u2019s new sustainable development goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was honored to be a part of the group of young passionate leaders who will be playing an\u00a0essential role in the implementation of the established goals,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

The UN\u2019s \u201cTransforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a>\u201d agenda\u00a0contained 17 new goals and 169 new targets. It was partly based on 2000\u2019s Millennium\u00a0Development Goals, which served as a guide for the past 15 years.<\/p>\n

The summit was held Sept. 25-27. Pope Francis and Malala Yousafzai were in the audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a great honor for me to be invited to the ceremony by the Secretary-General\u2019s Envoy on\u00a0Youth. It has been always my dream to work for something so\u00a0meaningful,\u201d Rafikova says.<\/p>\n

Rafikova\u2019s professional goal is to work for the UN, and she got taste of\u00a0that this summer during her\u00a0internship with the intergovernmental organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing an intern at the UN, I experienced even more the importance of intercultural\u00a0collaboration. I explored a new value of engagement for me: to live like a local while being\u00a0abroad with people from all over the world. It is a process of active, reciprocal learning.\u00a0Exploring another culture while representing and sharing your own is an invaluable\u00a0experience,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Rafikova credits\u00a0the Global Strategic Communications program at the SJMC for\u00a0helping her get an internship with the UN and participate in the Sustainable Development\u00a0Summit.\u201cGiven the notions of modern globalization, there is an increasing need for those able to\u00a0navigate communications across borders, customs and ideologies,\u201d she says. \u201c[The] program provides the\u00a0opportunity to learn about professional \u2018tools\u2019 needed to work within international settings.\u201d<\/p>\n

She adds: \u201cGrowing up, going to universities, working and participating in educational events in countries\u00a0as diverse as Uzbekistan, Russia, Germany, Japan, Thailand and the USA enabled me to\u00a0understand the importance of cross-cultural dialogue and engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n
