Stephen Burns is a seasoned health care executive who started his career as a Vietnam-era medic and corpsman in the U.S. Army. After almost four years of active duty, he knew that a career in nursing was the direction he would take; he later enrolled at FIU and attained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1978. In addition to receiving an MBA from Pepperdine University, Burns is a Fellow of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Nurse Executive Fellowship program. His career included positions as staff nurse, educator and a variety of leadership positions in the operating room and in intensive care that led him to spend a total of 16 years in executive leadership positions in hospitals throughout the U.S. Burn’s career also included consulting, adjunct faculty positions in three schools of nursing, and service on the Illinois Board of Nursing and three professional nursing and healthcare organizations. His most gratifying role is in mentoring emerging nurse leaders for management roles in healthcare. Burn’s personal interests include serving as the Music Coordinator for his church and volunteering with the ASPCA, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project.
